SOLICITOR DR. BABETTE TONDORF

Solicitor Dr. Babette Tondorf co-founded Menschen und Rechte - Assoziation freier Rechtsanwält*innen. She deals with all matters concerning labour and civil service law, as well as criminal law. She has successfully completed the specialist solicitor’s course for labour law. 

Professional Experience

Since her accreditation as a solicitor in 2005, Solicitor Dr. Tondorf has also been giving workshops on the core areas of her professional legal work amongst others, for the “Integrationsämter” (the public authorities responsible for awarding disability benefits), the trade union ver.di-Forum Nord and the Top Akademie. Furthermore, she runs training courses on the rights of disability representatives (“Schwerbehindertenvertretung), on disabled persons’ (equality) rights and employers’ duties at the workplace, on data protection, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and on the rights of the equality officer (“Gleichstellungsbeauftragte”). She possesses experience as external head of investigations in disciplinary proceedings under civil service law and teaches on the criminal law topics expert assessment and involuntary treatment and hospitalization.

One of her key areas of focus within criminal law is defending adolescents and persons likely to face hospitalisation in a psychiatric clinic or who have already been placed in one. In international criminal law proceedings before the Oberlandesgericht Stuttgart she represented Congolese victims and witnesses; this assignment involved two trips to East Africa in the years 2012 to 2014.

Solicitor Dr. Tondorf is a co-author of the Beck'sche Formularbuch für Strafverteidiger. As co-authors she and her father, Prof. Dr. Günter Tondorf publish the textbook "Psychologische und Psychiatrische Sachverständige im Strafverfahren" (Psychological and psychiatric expert witnesses in criminal proceedings). In addition, she writes for the Juris-Praxisreport on labour law as an author.

Voluntary work

Dr. Babette Tondorf has been on the executive board of the institute for conflict research (Instituts für Konfliktforschung e.V.) which organises yearly expert symposiums on topics concerning the interface of criminal law and psychiatry. Since November 2014 she has been a member of the executive board of the Hamburg Bar Association (HAV). Aside from that, she is a member of the German Bar Association, of the republican lawyers’ association, of the Deutsche Strafverteitiger e.V. as well as, of the Forum Anwaltsgeschichte e.V.

Since 2013 solicitor Dr. Tondorf has been a pro-bono advisor at the „Law Clinic“, a free legal aid project of Bucerius Law School and Diakonie Hamburg. Moreover, she is a mentor on Bucerius Law School’s mentoring programme.
